View the 2017 Obudsman Inquiry into behaviour management in schools. This report focuses on issues concerning students with complex needs and challenging behaviour. The report discusses the difficult challenges that schools face, but also draws attention to reasonable steps that can and should be taken to meet the learning and support needs of students, within a framework of best practice and evidence-based behaviour support.
This research undertaken for eSafety by Whereto Research Pty Ltd shows that the internet can be a great equaliser for young people with intellectual disability. The internet can help break down barriers, enabling communication and socialisation with their peers, while combatting isolation. However, there are real challenges in navigating potential online pitfalls. This research is based on interviews with 17 young people with intellectual disability aged 13-25, as well as 10 interviews with parents or carers and two group discussions with educators.

Carer Support Services support the recognition and process of carers as partners in health care. Barbara will outline her experience in working with carers to improve health outcomes. Barbara will provide some examples of how this has assisted children with co-existing mental health and intellectual/developmental disabilities.

This workshop hosted by the Austism Advisory and Support Service will include interactive activities, discussion and the presentation of evidence-based strategies to support the regulation and sensory needs of children and young people experiencing mental health complexities in the school setting, with a specific focus on Autism Spectrum Disorder and Developmental Trauma. The workshop will be delivered from an occupational therapy perspective, with additional reference to key neuroscience and attachment- based research.
This workshop hosted by the Austism Advisory and Support Service will provide educators with an understanding of neuro-diversity and what this can look like for children in the early childhood setting, with a specific focus on Autism Spectrum Disorder. This workshop will be exploring specific activities, routines and tasks that may be challenging for children on the spectrum and strategies of support will be discussed through the use of case studies.
